Response to Intervention RTI

After learning about RTI share how you feel about the classroom teacher being responsible for implementing interventions at the Tier I level.

I think that it is very appropriate for the teacher to be responsible at the Tier 1 level. The teacher is the witness to all the behaviors the student exhibits. The teacher is the person that is actually there. You cannot just assume the child has a problem that requires more than a little extra attention. You have to take the steps and decide whether there is something you can do as the student's teacher or if the student needs further help.

I think that the teacher implementing Teir 1 is very appropriate. I feel like there are many children who just have minor issues, but issues that need to be addressed and the teacher is the person who witnesses these difficulties. It would be silly to bring in a special education teacher just because a child struggles with their length on a timed math worksheet. It is the teacher's job to adjust and make changes so that all of her children succeed, but are also challenged to a point that still allows learning, but does not scare them away from school and their work. Being a teacher is a very demanding job, but a teacher's student's needs are very apparent to a teacher, and if a teacher can do something in the classroom to help their child along, I think that is the most appropriate thing to do.

A teacher implementing the Tier 1 level is appropriate, because at this stage there are usually only small problems that surface. I don't think a specialist should be pulled in at this level because they should have their time freed so that they can focus more on children with more demanding needs. Teachers are trained (or at least should be) to handle situations like these when they arrive.

I feel that it is important for the teacher to be responsible for implementing interventions at the Teir 1 level. As everyone else has already stated, there is no need to bring in a specialist at this beginning level. The teacher should be able to handle the needs of the students at this point. The teacher should also be able to make appropraite changes to reach the needs of the students.
